These solutions allow users to send a duress and person-down alerts via satellite and are designed for use in regions outside of the mobile phone networks. In the basic application, a duress alert sends satellite coordinates to web-based maps and simultaneously sends text or email messages to designated numbers or addresses. More advanced systems allow voice communication.

Spot Gen 4 GPS Messenger

Spot Gen 4 Satellite Messenger

Spot Messenger is a small transmitter worn on the belt or arm that allows you to contact friends, associates or emergency services in the event of accident or injury when you’re out of mobile phone coverage. Pressing one of the buttons sends different levels of warning via satellite to arrive at your chosen contact by SMS or email and allows them to locate or even track you via a web-based mapping service.

Five levels of contact:

  • “I am OK”/check in
  • custom message for tailored notification
  • track progress for continuous tracking
  • ask for help: emergency level 1

Troubleshooting

TROUBLESHOOTING SPOT Gen4 performs a self-diagnostic test each time it is powered on. SPOT recommends that you send and verify a Check In message before each trip. This also allows you to evaluate your entire messaging system, from the operational condition of the SPOT Gen4 to the readiness of those on your contact list.

How they work

Spot 4 one way satellite manager

The device needs to be first registered in the firmware FindMEspot.com by using the authorization code and serial number. The device’s profile is then configured from the SPOT My Account through a USB cable. Spot 4 sends out its messages with GPS coordinates. There is some specialised software that is needed for tracking of the device’s location.

How SPOT works

Spot X Two way messenger

Predominantly the same way as Spot 4

Spot X works by the user first activating a satellite plan and then activating Spot X on the user account through the firmware. The Spot X can send email and SMS messages to a destination mobile as well as email account. Spot X can be messaged back through email by putting in the number of the Spot X in front of the following email address e.g 123345678@textmyspotx.com.

You can also Configure waypoints, SOS and tracking, your mobile phone can also be paired to it through Bluetooth and allow you to have satellite communication. You can also link social media accounts to your Spot X and send messages to it.

Inreach Mini 2

inReach® satellite communicators use GPS satellites to find your position but send and receive messages through the Iridium satellite network. Under ideal conditions, messages can be sent within 30 seconds to a minute but may take up to 5 minutes depending on your surroundings. In certain situations, it could take longer, especially if tracking is not actively being used.

You will need to install specialised software on your Smart devices published by Garmin to allow communication between an InReach Mini 2 and a normal mobile phone.

For inReach devices to connect to the Iridium communication satellites, they need to be outside. There is only one Iridium satellite in the sky at a time. Each Iridium satellite passes by approximately every 9 minutes, travels North-South, and rarely flies directly overhead. Iridium satellites have a much lower orbit compared to GPS satellites, and an area surrounded by mountains, heavy tree cover, buildings, or other solid structures will increase the time it takes to send and receive messages or track points. Clouds have no effect on the communication between the Iridium satellites and the inReach device. The signal transmitted by the device may be too weak to reach the satellites through windows, so if you cannot connect to satellites indoors or in a vehicle, then you need to take the inReach device outside.

When the inReach device is used around a building or obstruction, it is best to be on the North or South side.

The user needs to first get a subscription from Garmin to use the satellite connectivity. Then download the Garmin messenger app and pair it up with the inReach mini. Then download the Garmin explorer app and activate your subscription on there to utilise the full features of the device.

Iridium GO (With Iridium Go app)

The user needs to have a SIM card installed into their iridum GO device before using it, and charge their Iridium Go device’s battery to full capacity.

The Iridium Go device needs to have the user install the Iridium GO app to allow communication between the User’s Smart device and the Iridium GO hardware. There are many different functionalities that can be configured on the Iridium GO including tracking and SOS as well as messaging.
